Why starting an electrical project without technical conditions is risky
Calculating a building's electrical demand is one thing; knowing how the grid will actually meet it is another. We look at what technical conditions really guarantee -- and what they don't.
Calculating a building's electrical demand and knowing the connection conditions the grid can actually provide are not the same thing. If the power, connection point or backup supply approach envisaged in the project does not match grid conditions, the design may need to change at a later stage.
Kazakhstan's Electricity Use Rules state that technical conditions arise in situations such as the connection of new or renovated electrical installations, changes to existing power, or changes to the external supply scheme or reliability category. Electricity Use Rules
What information do technical conditions clarify?
Depending on the project type, the connection document may cover the following:
- Requested and total connection power
- Connection point
- Voltage level
- Power supply reliability category
- Main and backup supply sources
- Responsibilities between the grid operator and the consumer
- Required grid reinforcement works
Kazakhstan's current technological connection rules separately regulate the application, contract and connection steps, particularly for facilities with an installed capacity of up to 200 kW. Technical conditions are not a project
Technical conditions define the conditions under which the connection can take place. The detailed design of cable sizing, panels, protection devices, earthing, generators or UPS systems is resolved within the electrical project itself.
For this reason, once technical conditions are obtained, the following checks should be made:
- Does the requested power meet the real need?
- Is the load calculation in the project consistent with the connection power?
- Does the main and backup supply approach meet the operational need?
- Is the boundary of grid and customer responsibilities clear?
- Has future capacity growth been taken into account?
Assessing connection conditions at the start of the design helps reduce the scope of major project changes later on.
